You know that feeling when your bra and panties match? Your skin is clear, your crops are thriving, your credit score is skyrocketing, and you’ve just got your whole life together. Now, you can feel the same way about your beauty look.
Matchy-matchy makeup and nails have taken Instagram by storm, with our favorite influencers and nail artists coordinating colors and designs. The trend is all about embracing its campy nature: The more spot-on, the better.
And the matching of the makeup and nails is nothing new. The trend first gained popularity on the Fall 2013 runways and again on the Spring 2015 runways. “I feel like matching your lipstick to your nails has always been an old school beauty trend, but recently the overall monochromatic look from your makeup to your nails has gained a lot of popularity,” says nail artist Amy Le, who has worked with influencer Brittany Xavier on matching looks. “Personally, I love a full monochromatic beauty look from your hands to your face. So chic, and it pulls everything together, especially Brittany’s neon look.” The 2020 version of the trend also seems to put more of a premium on intricate nail art and shadow designs, an update we can thank Instagram for with Xavier and friends at the forefront.
Xavier says she finds inspiration by experimenting with color and makeup. “Lately, different new makeup products have inspired what I do each time with my nails,” says Xavier. “When I tried the neon yellow eyeliner and loved the way it looked on my eyes, I thought it would be cool to also try it as a neon French trip. I also got a clear gloss gel for my lids and was really inspired by the transparent but ultra shiny look and is what inspired my clear nail extensions.”
It’s 2020 and it’s time to get your coordination game on lock. Below, a few matching nail and makeup ideas to get you started.
