Don’t deny it: Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde dominated the early 2000s. When the first Legally Blonde movie released in 2001, viewers quickly fell in love with Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods. The film made over $141 million in box office sales worldwide, eventually prompting the second film in the series.
Because Legally Blonde is often hailed as one of the greatest and funniest noughties comedies, it’s no wonder that fans have waited with bated breath for news of a threequel. Thankfully, we all got our wish. The franchise is slated to return to the big screen with a third movie, 15 years later after Legally Blonde 2 hit theaters.
Here, everything we know about Legally Blonde 3—including which original cast members would return—before it hits theaters.
Witherspoon first confirmed a third movie in June 2018.
Witherspoon took to Instagram to make the announcement that, yes, Legally Blonde 3 is officially happening. To make the announcement, the actress posted a short video of herself in Elle’s sequined hot pink bikini, leisurely sunbathing on a pool float. “It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3,” she captioned the post.
Witherspoon donned the bikini back in 2016 to celebrate Legally Blonde‘s 15th anniversary, so it’s fitting that she brought it back out to confirm the third movie two years later.
There’s a script!
At the season 2 New York premiere for Big Little Lies in May, Witherspoon was asked about her iconic Legally Blonde character, and if she could reveal any details about a possible third movie. “[We have] a script, but we haven’t shot anything,” the actress said while speaking with Entertainment Tonight. “[Elle’s] a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero’s journey like she does in the first movie, and I’m having a great time working on it.”
The original writers and producers are back, too.
Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, the screenwriters responsible for bringing Amanda Brown’s book to the big screen back in 2001, are tasked with writing the script, according to Deadline. Original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, President of Platt Productions, will work on the film. Witherspoon is also set to produce the film, with her production company, Hello Sunshine. There is currently no word on who will be directing the film.
There’s no official release date.
It’s unclear when the movie will hit theaters, though IMDB says pre-production is expected to start in May 2020.
Jennifer Coolidge would be happy to return as Paulette.
A crucial member of the “Bend and Snap” movement could be involved with the new movie. Jennifer Coolidge, who played Elle’s manicurist best friend in the original films, says she’d return if asked. “I know that there’s a script that’s in the works, I’m told,” Coolidge told ET. “And I keeping seeing all this press about it.”
“I hear that it is going, but I just don’t know what the timeline is,” she continued. “But you know, if I’m asked to do it I’ll definitely be in there.” She added, “I would love to play Paulette again.”
Witherspoon says several OG characters could return.
In October, when Witherspoon was asked for a status update on the third movie, she responded, “It’s just a development project right now, so we’ll see.” But she did tease to ET that a few actors from the first two films could be slated for a return.
“I love Jennifer Coolidge and Luke Wilson and Selma Blair and so there’s so many great characters that people love,” Witherspoon said. “If we end up doing it, hopefully they end up all being there.”
