Earlier this month, Rami Malek used his Breakthrough Artist Award acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival to thank one of his Bohemian Rhapsody co-stars in a very special way.
“Thank you, Lucy Boynton. You have been my ally, my confidant, my love. I appreciate you so much,” the 37-year-old told the crowd, confirming the rumors to be true: Rami Malek has found somebody to love. The actress who played his muse and love interest in the movie is now his love interest in real life.
Those who have seen the Oscar-nominated Queen biopic will know that Boynton played Freddie Mercury’s partner Mary Austin, arguably her biggest role yet. The 25-year-old actress was excited and inspired to take on the role because of the genuine love that Mercury and Austin had for each other. “I think one of the main things that attracted me to the part of Mary was the dynamic that she and Freddie have and had throughout his entire life and their lives together,” she said in an interview. “Although it started off as a romantic relationship, it is something that is so much deeper.”
If the film left you wanting to know more about her, here’s a guide to the actress that stole Rami’s heart on and offscreen.
She was born a New Yorker.
Boynton was born in the Big Apple on January 17, 1994, but moved to London with her family when she was a child, which explains her accent.
Both her parents are writers.
Boynton didn’t seem to inherit the acting bug from her parents—she acquired it on her own. Her parents, Graham Boynton and Adriaane Pielou, are writers. Her dad is the group travel editor at the Telegraph and her mother is a travel writer.
She got her big break at 12.
Boynton officially made her foray into feature film back in 2006 when she secured a spot in Miss Potter with Renee Zellweger. Since then, Boynton has had roles in I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Rebel in the Rye, Murder on the Orient Express, and more. This ultimately led to her landing the Bohemian Rhapsody role.
You’ll be seeing more of her soon.
Next up for Boynton will be Netflix’s forthcoming political comedy The Politician, which has a highly guarded plot, but also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Ben Platt, Dylan McDermott, and Zoey Deutch. The show is reportedly coming later this year.
She hasn’t been publicly linked to any other male stars.
Boynton has kept a low profile here—Malek is the only actor that Boynton has been romantically linked to in the media.
She was first rumored to be dating Malek back in April 2018.
A source told Us Weekly that Boynton and Malek met on set while they were filming Bohemian Rhapsody. “He is so into her. He goes and visits her in London all the time.” In May, the pair was spotted attending a U2 concert in Los Angeles and were seen on a lunch date together in August.
