Why Ariana Grande Is Skipping the 2019 Billboard Music Awards

Ariana Grande, who’s currently on her Sweetener World Tour, won’t be able to make a pit stop tonight at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. The singer just explained on Twitter that she will still perform remotely on the show but won’t be on the red carpet.

“happy @BBMAs day everybody !” she wrote. “So wish we were there with u in person tonight. Thank you @billboard for all of your endless support, love and for having us perform for u remotely from the Sweetener world tour.”

Grande is performing tomorrow in San Jose for her tour. She did a concert in Portland, Oregon, last night.

Grande is nominated for several awards at the Billboard Music Awards: Top Artist, the Billboard Chart Achievement Award, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Streaming Song Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Song Artist, and Top Social Artist.

This would’ve been the singer’s first big red carpet of 2019. But she has given fans a glimpse of her almost-was red carpet style this year. When Grande decided to skip the Grammys in January because of her issues with the show’s producers over what her performance would be like, she posted photos to her Instagram of the Cinderella-esque gown by Zac Posen she had been planning to wear to the ceremony.

It was the night Grande won her first Grammy Award for best pop vocal album. The honor was announced during the Grammys pre-show.

On Twitter, Grande reacted to her win shortly after the news broke. “I know I’m not there tonight (trust, I tried and still truly wished it had worked out tbh) and I know I said I try not to put too much weight into these things …. but fuck ……. this is wild and beautiful. Thank you so much,” she wrote. She then gave her thank yous to the people behind her album who helped it become a Grammy-winning success.

Grande’s last big award show appearance that she physically attended was the Billboard Women in Music awards in December, where she was given the Woman of the Year award. During her acceptance speech, she said, “I find it interesting that this has been one of the best years of my career and the worst of my life. I have everything I’ve ever dreamt of having, and as of late I’ve discovered that it’s the things I’ve always had and the people I’ve always had that still make me the happiest.”

Grande did perform at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in March, but it was a pre-taped performance since she was about to start her tour.
