You Season 2 Could’ve Had a Very Different Ending

Spoilers for You season 2 below.

It’s only January 7, but You season 2 is already a strong contender for our favorite show of the year. In the follow up season of the Netflix Original, we join Joe Goldberg in Los Angeles, where he falls hard for Love Quinn.

And while we’ve already spotted some sneaky links to Guinevere Beck from season 1 and also read some theories about what could happen in season 3, some fans have pointed out how different the ending of season 2 could’ve been.

That’s because in the book the series is based on, Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes, there are actually a lot of differences. From the fact Candace doesn’t exist to how Joe and Love meet, a fair amount of the plot has been adapted for the TV version.

You season 2 was meant to have a very different ending

One of the biggest changes revolves around the ending—and you won’t believe how different it could’ve been had the show followed the book more closely.

In Hidden Bodies, Forty goes on a bender to Las Vegas, and so Joe promises Love he’ll head out to find him and bring him home. It turns out, Joe actually has plans to murder Forty when he gets there.

Once Joe locates Forty, he drugs him and drives him out to a Clown Motel in the desert. It’s here that he attempts to drown Forty in a hot spring, and leaves him for dead. Only, er, Forty doesn’t die—and returns to a hospital in Los Angeles when tourists find him.

At this point, Forty knows all about Joe’s murderous escapades, but rather than warning Love about them, he decides to hold them over Joe’s head. If Joe continues to write successful scripts for Forty, he will continue to keep Joe’s secret.

And perhaps Forty’s plan would’ve worked, had he not been hit by a drunk driver and died later in the book.

In Netflix’s version of You, Forty finds out about Joe’s murderous path through a visit to Dr. Nicky. He then goes to warn Love—who obviously already knows—and is later shot by Officer Fincher.
