When MTV announced The Hills: New Beginnings, fans had a lot of questions: Will the entire cast be coming back for the reboot? How does Mischa Barton fit into all of this? Is Brody Jenner still really that hot? But the most pressing question was if the beloved theme song, “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, would be returning for the sunny intro credits. The answer is yes, but also no.
“Unwritten” is indeed returning for the reboot, but with a new remixed version. MTV shared a behind-the-scenes video of Bedingfield recording the track, in which she discusses how the song got picked up by the reality show. “‘Unwritten’ is on my very first record,” she explains. “I wrote the song, and there was this feeling of, ‘Wow, I couldn’t say it any better.’ It was the number one pop song in America, then MTV came to me and said, ‘We’ve got this new show, we would love to use it as our theme song.'”
Instead of reworking the original recording, Bedingfield laid down new vocals for a completely different sound. “Doing a remix has been really fun. A lot of times with remixes, people take the original vocals and then change the chord and the beat around it,” she added. “I wanted to re-sing it.” It’s so good it made Bedingfield and legendary musician and producer Linda Perry do fist-bumps.
